Ecologist Realization

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a European directive aimed at improving chemical and ecological water quality. The program runs until 2027 and includes measures to improve water quality and ecology. A government organization is legally obliged to have implemented the measures of the Water Framework Directive by 2027. In the region, the measures mainly consist of constructing channels and nature-friendly banks, which creates better conditions for plants, birds, and fish in the waters.

Tidal action and the transition from fresh to salt water are characteristic of this region.

What you do

As a realization ecologist, you control and ensure correct implementation of the duty of care in the context of species protection and, if relevant, area protection. You also provide support in case of ecological incidents. The realization ecologist leads the following activities:

  • Further assessment of definitive and executive designs and motivated declaration of the acceptability of their ecological effects.
  • Contributing ideas, advising on, and controlling measures for protected species and areas.
  • Coordination with technical management and environmental management.
  • Point of contact for ecology for the contractor.
  • Control of ecological work protocols.
  • Performing observations, including incidental checks on compliance with ecological work protocols during execution, together with the contractor's ecologist (one per project).
  • Coordination with internal ecologists and lawyers of the organization.
  • Knowledge sharing between project ecologists and regional ecologists.
  • Organizing 4-6 weekly coordination meetings between the program's ecologists.
  • Alignment with national and organizational frameworks, guidelines, and agreements.
  • Sharing codes of conduct for ecological work protocols with the relevant implementing organization.
  • Coordination with the IPM team on cross-project matters.

What they ask

  • At least a completed higher professional education (hbo) in a relevant field (e.g., Forest and Nature Management, Environmental Science, Nature or Landscape Management, or similar).
  • Demonstrable minimum of three years of knowledge and work experience with specialist ecological work in a client or contractor environment.

Preferences.

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience with relevant nature legislation and policy.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience with ecological guidance of the realization phase of large nature projects.
