As an institution worker at a government organization, you ensure safety and structure in a detention center. Here, you are responsible for adult men in immigration detention and the criminal justice regime of the House of Detention. The role demands self-confidence and stress resistance. You supervise and actively contribute to the reintegration of detainees.
You face daily choices between intervening or understanding, giving space or setting boundaries, and help detainees on their way to a better future with a balance between strictness and humanity.
What you do
You provide tailored security, every day. The detainees you work with are all different. Diverse backgrounds, cultures, and problems require a flexible and decisive approach in every situation. You start your day early, wake the detainees, open the doors, and escort them to appointments or activities. With a keen eye for safety and attention to behavior and signals, you actively contribute to their daily routine. Your work includes, among other things:
- Monitoring the atmosphere in the unit, being alert to tensions and disturbances of order.
- Conducting mentor interviews with detainees, guiding and supporting them in their personal trajectories.
- Checking the exercise yard and ensuring it is safe for use by detainees.
- Taking urine samples, remaining vigilant for abnormalities and potential safety risks.
- Performing administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files.
Profile
You have no trouble maintaining your boundaries. You are vocal and do not shy away from a firm conversation. Thanks to your ability to put things into perspective, you are not easily flustered by problems or challenges. You are also empathetic, allowing you to understand the detainees' experiences, which helps you stimulate and motivate them appropriately. At the same time, you can maintain professional distance.
This means you do not become too friendly or personal with the detainees, ensuring a safe and structured environment.

- Demonstrable MBO 4 (intermediate vocational education level 4) work and thinking level (assessed with an aptitude test).
- Good physical and mental condition.
- Good communication skills in Dutch, both spoken and written, for example, for writing reports.
- Willingness to work irregular shifts, including evening shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- You enjoy working with people and helping them progress, even when they resist, by remaining calm, setting clear boundaries, and acting with conviction.
Preferences.
- Some work experience in security, guidance, and/or care is a plus.
Practical
- You will be trained by an experienced colleague and follow a 6-week internal training course.
- You work according to a monthly schedule, which is known 6 weeks in advance, with the possibility to indicate your preferences for working days and times.
