Professor Development of Microfluidic Chips and Microreactors

An educational institution is looking for a part-time professor for the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences, Bioengineering Sciences department.

What you do

Teaching assignment.

  • Co-holder of a 6 ECTS course and teaches approximately half of the lessons.
  • Supervises master's and doctoral students with their thesis as (co-)promoter.
  • Involved in the organization of workshops and training (e.g., within the framework of a competence center).

Research assignment.

  • Develops microfluidic applications using microstructured chips made of Si, glass, and polymers. These applications are related, among other things, to analytical and preparative separations and to inducing and handling suspensions, but will also gradually develop new applications on own initiative or in collaboration with a research team.
  • Develops fabrication process flows and advanced setups for these microfluidic applications.
  • Performs supporting numerical multiphysics simulations (Comsol Multiphysics) to bring understanding to systems equipped with components designed to manipulate fluids and particles, such as electrodes, actuators, rotors, etc.

Other tasks.

  • Contributes to the general operation of a research team and interacts with the associated research group and core facility.
  • Develops project proposals and supervises awarded projects.

Profile

  • Doctorate in Sciences or (Bio-)Engineering Sciences.
  • Minimum of 4 years of post-doctoral experience.
  • Currently holds a half-time post-doctoral appointment at the institution in the field of microfluidics/microreactors for the next 3 years.
  • Wants to apply expertise to both fundamental and applied research.
  • Can motivate, coach, and stimulate collaboration.
  • Communicates fluently, actively builds networks, and feels comfortable in contacts with researchers, students, and industrial partners.
  • Strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple projects in parallel, and works proactively, structured, and solution-oriented.
  • Publications in good (Q1, WoS registered) professional journals on relevant topics.
  • Expert in microfluidics and has experience with related experimental techniques and can develop complete setups. Has experience with and insight into the fabrication of chips (Si, glass, plastics).
  • Has experience with teaching a university course and supervising students for their Master's and doctoral theses.
  • Can work with Comsol Multiphysics and CAD programs to design chips and setups.
  • Has experience with writing scientific projects and with project management and reporting of large, interdisciplinary projects.
  • Endorses the educational vision of the university.
  • Every first appointment is partly dependent on successfully teaching a trial lesson.
  • Language requirements: Teaching language at CEFR level C1. Administrative language Dutch at CEFR level B2 after a maximum of 5 years.
  • Meets the conditions for obtaining a valid permit and residence requirements.
