As a correctional officer at a government organization, you ensure safety and structure in a prison. The pressure can sometimes be high, which requires someone who is confident and stress-resistant. You supervise and actively contribute to the reintegration of prisoners. Intervening or understanding, giving space or setting boundaries: these are choices you face daily. What you do
The prisoners you work with are all different. Various backgrounds, cultures, and problems require a flexible and decisive approach in every situation. You start your day early, ready to act decisively. You wake the detainees, open the doors, and accompany them to appointments or activities. With a keen eye for safety and attention to behavior and signals, you actively contribute to their reintegration. Furthermore, your work includes:
- monitoring the atmosphere in the department, being alert to tensions and disturbances of order
- conducting mentoring conversations with prisoners, guiding and supporting them in their personal trajectories
- checking the exercise yard and ensuring it is safe for use by prisoners
- performing urine controls, remaining vigilant for abnormalities and potential safety risks
- carrying out administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files
Profile
Maintaining your boundaries? You have no trouble with that. You like to make yourself heard and do not shy away from having a firm conversation. Thanks to your ability to relativize, you are not easily rattled by problems or challenges. You are also empathetic, allowing you to empathize well with the experiences of the prisoners. This helps you to sense their needs and feelings and to stimulate and motivate them in an appropriate manner. At the same time, you can maintain professional distance.
This means you do not become too friendly or personal with the prisoners. By maintaining this balance, you ensure a safe and structured environment. Furthermore, you have:
- demonstrable MBO 4 (intermediate vocational education level 4) working and thinking level, tested with an aptitude test
- good physical and mental condition
- good communication skills in Dutch, both written and spoken, for example for writing reports
- willingness to work irregular shifts
- You enjoy working with people and helping them progress, even if they resist. You remain calm, set clear boundaries, and act with conviction
Practical
Before you start working independently, you will be trained by an experienced colleague and follow a generic training and a function-specific training. This training period lasts a total of 7 weeks. During the training weeks, you are available full-time. You follow the training during working hours and at the organization's expense. Each month, you work according to a new schedule. You receive this 6 weeks in advance, so you know what to expect. You can indicate your preferences for working days and times.
