Penitentiary Officer

• Monitor the atmosphere in the department, being alert to tensions and disturbances of order.
• Conduct mentor interviews with detainees, guiding and supporting them in their personal trajectories.
• Check the exercise yard and ensure it is safe for use by detainees.
• Conduct urine controls, remaining vigilant for abnormalities and potential safety risks.
• Perform administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files.
• Wake detainees, open doors, and escort them to appointments or activities.

What they ask

• Demonstrable MBO 4 (intermediate vocational education level 4) work and thinking level (assessed with an aptitude test).
• Good physical and mental condition.
• Good communication skills in Dutch, both written and spoken (e.g., for reports).
• Willingness to work irregular shifts.

• You can maintain your boundaries and are not afraid to have firm conversations.
• Ability to relativize so you are not easily upset by problems or challenges.
• Empathy to understand the detainees' experiences, while also maintaining professional distance.
• You enjoy working with people and helping them progress, even when they show resistance.
• You remain calm, set clear boundaries, and act with conviction.

• Onboarding period with an experienced colleague.
• Completion of a generic and a function-specific training course totaling 7 weeks (full-time, during working hours, and at the institution's expense).
• Monthly schedule, known 6 weeks in advance, with the possibility to indicate preferences.
• Surcharge for irregular shifts, potentially up to €450 gross extra salary per month.
• The application procedure includes an online home test (aptitude test and questionnaires), followed by a selection day with two interviews, an aptitude test check, and a physical fitness test.
• A VOG (Certificate of Conduct) and a medical examination are part of the procedure.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
