Professor of Climate Attribution for Tropical Cyclones

This position concerns a part-time academic role within a Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Department of Water and Climate.
- The focus is on climate attribution for extreme weather conditions in data-poor regions.
What you do
Teaching assignment.
- You supervise MA thesis students.
- You occasionally offer a lecture at MA level in a domain related to your expertise.
Research assignment.
- You conduct interdisciplinary research connecting physical climate science with socio-economic consequences and societal applications, including climate justice, climate litigation, and loss and damage assessments.
- Guiding students in research practices and the willingness to present findings at conferences and publish are essential.
- You have a strong interest in connecting climate attribution with current issues, with particular attention to vulnerable and data-poor regions.
- Your research domain includes:
- Attribution of extreme weather events in tropical cyclones: quantifying the influence of anthropogenic climate change on tropical cyclones and other extreme weather events, particularly in data-poor and underrepresented regions.
- Climate justice, policy, and legal applications: translating attribution research into robust and accessible evidence for climate litigation, loss and damage mechanisms, policymakers, affected communities, and other stakeholders.
- You support the acquisition of financial resources for fundamental, strategic, and applied projects at national and European/international levels.
- You guide and coach PhD students.
- You collaborate with relevant partners in Belgium and other EU countries.
Other tasks.
- You contribute to public outreach through publications and lectures, emphasizing the importance of climate attribution for understanding extreme weather and providing information for current challenges in climate, policy, and society.
- You also contribute to the visibility and network of the subject and research group and the educational institution.
What they ask
- A master's degree in geography, physical geography, earth system sciences, or a closely related field.
- A doctorate in geography, climate sciences, or a closely related field.
- Senior researcher with expertise in climate attribution and extreme weather events, particularly through the analysis and modeling of tropical cyclones in data-poor and underrepresented regions.
- Demonstrable expertise in the detection and attribution of extreme weather events and in the influence of anthropogenic climate change on their physical characteristics and socio-economic consequences.
- Experience with interdisciplinary research at the intersection of climate science and human rights.
- You endorse the educational vision of the educational institution.
- Successfully teaching a trial lesson.
- Language requirements:
- Proficiency in the language of instruction at CEFR level C1.
- Proficiency in the administrative language Dutch at CEFR level B2 after a maximum of 5 years, with a foreseen integration trajectory if necessary.
- For non-EEA nationals: meet the conditions for obtaining a valid permit and residence conditions.
