Physician and researcher

North HollandHybrid40 hours/week<3months

Not everyone undergoing sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass achieves the same result. Approximately 20-30% of patients lose insufficient weight or show insufficient metabolic improvement. The central question of this PhD project is why some patients respond better to metabolic bariatric surgery than others, and whether this can be predicted before surgery. This is a joint research line of a specialized clinic and an academic medical center.

A BIG-registered physician is sought who wants to combine clinical work with PhD research.

What you will do. As a researcher, you will identify which preoperative factors are associated with weight loss and metabolic improvement after metabolic bariatric surgery. You will focus on, among other things:

  • inflammatory markers and insulin sensitivity
  • factors involved in glucose regulation
  • psychological characteristics and eating behavior
  • cardiorespiratory fitness

You will work within a research group that conducts translational research into obesity, focusing on mechanisms contributing to insulin resistance and the interaction between nutrition, metabolism, and the brain. The research uses a large prospective cohort whose inclusion is almost complete, allowing you to quickly start analyzing an extensive clinical and metabolic dataset.

The goal is to better understand which factors predict the success of metabolic bariatric surgery and thus ultimately contribute to a more personalized treatment of obesity.

As a physician, you will guide patients who are treated with metabolic bariatric surgery or medication. You will work closely with coaches and the other members of the multidisciplinary treatment team. You will be responsible for, among other things:

  • medical check-ups
  • assessment of treatment results
  • medical guidance throughout the entire treatment process

Profile

  • You are a BIG-registered physician; both basic doctors and doctors with clinical experience are welcome.
  • You have an affinity for or interest in scientific research.
  • You are interested in obesity, metabolic health, and the question of why patients respond differently to metabolic bariatric surgery.
  • You can work independently and easily switch between clinical practice and research.
  • You are analytical, curious, and motivated to further develop as a physician-researcher.

What they offer.

  • Scientific supervision from a research group of an academic medical center and from the clinic.
  • Collaboration with other PhD students and researchers within the clinic and the academic medical center.
  • A fixed 13th month and access to training opportunities.
