As a bridge and lock keeper, you contribute to water management and ensure optimal passage for shipping on important canals. This happens day and night. Thanks to your efforts, waterways remain safe and accessible to everyone. The work is varied and sometimes unpredictable due to changing weather conditions, water levels, and a wide diversity of people and ships. You collaborate with skippers, patrol vessels, administrators, and emergency services.
What you do
- Operate bridges and locks remotely from a control room using digital systems, cameras, modern tracking, and communication equipment.
- Potentially work on local objects in the area with local controls.
- Supervise, guide shipping, and intervene when necessary.
- Work according to fixed and strict procedures.
- Be part of a team of approximately 35 operators working in varying compositions at the locks in the region.
- Work in shifts (24/7), including early, afternoon, and night shifts.
Profile
- Completed MBO level 3 education (intermediate vocational education).
- Reside within a maximum of 1 hour's drive from the operational locations.
- Possess a B driving license and a personal car.
- Flexibly available for shift duties, including outside office hours, nights and weekends.
- Stress resistance: working in a controlled and effective manner under time pressure or in risky situations.
- Anticipation: timely recognition of developments, assessment of their consequences for work, and acting accordingly, even with limited information.
- Oral communication skills in Dutch and nautical German.
