Practice Assistant Communication Skills

A skills center plays a crucial role in teaching essential skills to students and professionals, with the aim of enabling high-quality healthcare. This center offers a wide range of skills, from communicative and instrumental-technical skills to advanced specialized simulation education. As a Practice Assistant Communication Skills, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of about fifteen employees with diverse profiles in education, administration, facility support, and technology.

You will collaborate closely on content with the communication skills coordinator and other lecturers, while actively contributing to the broader operation and assignments of the skills center.

What you will do.

  • Act as a point of contact for students with questions about learning activities related to communication skills.
  • Be responsible for the internal management of virtual communication training programs (software tool TrainTool), used to prepare students for communication work sessions.
  • Check students' lesson preparations in the virtual communication training programs and provide online feedback for exceptional problems.
  • Guide communication work sessions within a bachelor's degree program, where communication skills are practiced and observed during role-plays, followed by a debriefing.
  • Prepare educational activities that encourage students to peer-to-peer reflective intervision.
  • Guide simulation training within a bachelor's degree program, where communication skills are observed and adjusted during debriefings, together with a team of other lecturers.
  • Contribute to the training and support of the communication teaching team, including the distribution of teaching materials.
  • Optimize cases, film material on exemplary doctor-patient communication, and exercises used within the virtual communication training programs and work sessions, in collaboration with the coordinator.

The taught and practiced doctor-patient communication skills include:

  • Active and sensitive listening to physical and psychosocial well-being and care needs.
  • Informing about medical-technical findings.
  • Achieving shared decision-making.
  • Communicating to avoid transgressive behavior.
  • Conducting bad news conversations.
  • Motivational interviewing to promote lifestyle and treatment adherence.
  • Communicating in case of anger.
  • Communicating in case of sadness.
  • Culturally and socially sensitive communication.
  • Communicating about sexual health.
  • Giving and receiving feedback.

Practical aspects. In addition to your assignments within communication education, you will actively contribute to the daily organizational, logistical, and administrative operations of the skills center. This includes:

  • Organization and support of station exams as a form of assessment for students.
  • Organization of information days and other education-related activities.
  • Daily presence, including preparing and closing rooms and supervision of, for example, self-study stations.
  • Taking on team-related tasks and responsibilities according to the operational needs of the center.

Profile

  • Hold a master's degree in psychology, pedagogy, nursing and midwifery, rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy, speech and audiology sciences, family and sexological sciences, or another healthcare profession.
  • A plus: experience with interactions with patients/clients in a healthcare context.
  • A plus: academic teacher training and/or teaching experience.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Experience with Office applications and interest in digital educational innovation.
  • Flexibility to adapt your working hours to student timetables and the needs of the teaching team, both in terms of daily schedule and holiday planning.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, problem-solving ability, and the ability to take initiative and responsibility and meet deadlines.
  • Eagerness to learn and willingness for self-reflection and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain contacts and a network.
  • Team player who can also work independently and take responsibility.
  • Analytical ability and critical reflection with an eye for quality improvement.
