Correctional Officer management regimes
As a correctional officer at a government organization, you ensure safety and structure in a correctional facility. The role demands self-confidence and stress resistance. You supervise and actively contribute to the reintegration of detainees. Daily, you face choices between intervening or understanding, giving space or setting boundaries, and help detainees towards a better future with a balance between strictness and humanity.
What you do
You work with detainees from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and with various problems, requiring a flexible and decisive approach in every situation. Your daily tasks include:
- Waking detainees, opening doors, and escorting them to appointments or activities.
- Monitoring the atmosphere in the department, being alert to tensions and disturbances.
- Conducting mentor interviews with detainees, guiding and supporting them in their personal trajectories.
- Checking the exercise yard to ensure it is safe for use by detainees.
- Performing urine controls, remaining vigilant for abnormalities and potential safety risks.
- Carrying out administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files.
What they ask You maintain your boundaries, are not afraid to have firm conversations, and are not easily rattled by problems or challenges. You are empathetic and can relate to the experiences of detainees, while maintaining professional distance. Furthermore, you have:
- Proven MBO 4 (intermediate vocational education level 4) work and thinking level.
- Good physical and mental condition.
- Strong communication skills in Dutch, both verbal and written.
- Willingness to work irregular shifts.
- Motivation to work with people and help them progress, even when they show resistance.
Practical
Before you start working independently, you will be trained by an experienced colleague and follow a generic and function-specific training course lasting a total of 7 weeks. During the training weeks, you will be available full-time. Each month you will work according to a new schedule, which will be known 6 weeks in advance. You can indicate your preferences for working days and times.
