User Experience Designer
A software company develops software that helps Dutch and Belgian safety regions and healthcare organizations manage and improve the professional competence of their employees. This includes planning, recording, and executing exercises, training, and eLearning, as well as incident registration and remuneration for volunteer firefighters. The users are professionals: exercise coordinators, planners, managers, and firefighters who need to record information on their phones while on the go.
They work in the system all day. This makes it a different discipline than designing a consumer app: it involves a lot of data, complex schedules, roles and rights, and screens that are used intensively daily. A design that looks good but fails in an edge case is of no help here.
From the start, you will be involved in the implementation of the software. You advise clients on the best setup, guide the implementation process, and transfer everything structured to the users. You translate client wishes into a working solution, help users get started, and ensure a smooth introduction. Thanks to your keen eye and clear communication, organizations get the most out of the software.
Even after going live, you remain available for optimization and support, building trust and long-term collaboration.
All markets are served from one central platform, where different components are activated per client based on configuration. The front-end is a web application in React for the daily work of coordinators and administrators, plus a PWA for employees on the go. There is a growing component library that you will build upon and further develop. You will work in a small R&D team with a handful of developers, a UX specialist/PO, a technical consultant, and an R&D manager.
You will also have extensive contact with colleagues from consultancy, sales, and customer support – they are closest to the client and are your main source of user insights. You will also go out to clients to observe how work is actually done.
There is a good UX foundation, and the next step is bigger than the last: from a growing component set to a true design system, with defined tokens and patterns. From project-specific UX to usability that we structurally test, measure, and improve. You will have a lot of influence on how we take this step, together with the UX specialist and the developers. You will work with an experienced UX specialist who knows the domain and the profession inside out.
Part of their time is dedicated to other tasks – including the role of product owner for the mobile platform – which creates space and a need for someone to help carry the design and research work. So, you will have an experienced colleague to spar with, while also having your own topics to tackle.
AI-assisted development is not a sideline experiment here, but the way we work daily – from research and implementation to review and documentation, and also on the design side, with Figma and AI tooling. For you as a designer, the most important consequence is that building is faster than ever, so the question "what should we actually build?" has become more decisive than ever. Well-researched and well-thought-out design is precisely where the gain lies now.
An idea can quickly be presented as a working prototype, and we work with short releases: what you design is with the client shortly thereafter. This makes your work visible and more direct.
What you do
- You develop screens and components, from initial sketch to a design that developers can work with.
- You advance the design system: define, maintain, and expand components, patterns, and design tokens, together with the UX specialist and the developers.
- You evaluate and improve the usability of the software: identify where users get stuck, what takes too many clicks, and which screens need attention first.
- You test your designs with real users – usability tests, on-site observation, feedback on what you see.
- You create prototypes to validate ideas early, with colleagues and clients, using the tooling that leads to a good answer fastest.
- You contribute to thinking about the information structure and the underlying data flows, not just the screen – what data exists, where it comes from, and what happens in edge cases.
- You contribute to the organization's commercial expressions: from visual consistency in presentations, demos, and the website to developing concepts for tenders, in collaboration with marketing and sales.
What they ask
- A completed HBO or university degree in interaction design, communication & multimedia design, human-computer interaction, or a design specialization within computer science. Guideline: HBO with a few years of experience, or recently graduated from university.
- Experience with mockups and iterative prototyping in Figma, and willingness to fully utilize AI tooling.
- A portfolio with your application – a few examples showing how you go from a question to a design.
- Experience with structured design systems and design tokens – you have previously worked with a system that goes beyond a folder of components.
- Experience with user-centered design and usability testing: you base design choices on what you have researched, not on what you find aesthetically pleasing.
- An understanding of software development. You don't need to be able to program, but you understand how data flows through a system and can discuss with developers what a design costs to build.
- You enjoy collaborating and dare to defend your design – and let it go if practice proves you wrong.
- Fluent in spoken and written Dutch; you will have direct contact with Dutch and Belgian clients.
- Pluses (not requirements): experience with marketing communications, knowledge of React or CSS, and experience with B2B SaaS and developing concepts based on tenders.
Practical
- A one-year contract with the prospect of permanent employment.
- A good salary commensurate with your experience.
- Creative freedom and significant influence on the design system and screens.
- An experienced UX specialist as a sparring partner.
- Visible impact – short releases mean your work is quickly on thousands of professionals' screens.
- Room for growth, in breadth (marketing, product) or depth (design system, research).
- A lot of personal responsibility and room for your own input – and colleagues who are happy to think along with you.
- A workplace in a nice office with an informal atmosphere and good lunch options.
- The possibility to work partially from home.
- 25 vacation days per year, with the option to buy extra days.
- 8% holiday allowance.
- Ample opportunity for professional and personal development, including working with the latest AI tooling.
- A company laptop.
- Travel expense reimbursement.
- An attractive bonus scheme linked to company results.
