Postdoc Predictive Plasma Assisted Combustion: Advanced Kinetic Modeling

BrusselsHybrid38 hours/week6-12months

This is a full-time postdoctoral mandate within the framework of a European research project focused on clean plasma-based technologies.

  • Plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) offers promising perspectives for cleaner and more efficient combustion of sustainable fuels.
  • Further industrial application is limited by the lack of predictive computer models that accurately describe complex interactions between plasma discharges, chemical reactions, and flame dynamics.
  • The project addresses this challenge by developing an innovative multiphysics simulation framework combining first-principles modeling with machine learning, reduced-order techniques, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • The project will deliver a new generation of predictive tools for the design and optimization of low-emission combustion systems.

What you do

  • Develop a new generation of plasma-combustion kinetic models by combining state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, experimental measurements, and data-driven methods.
  • Establish detailed state-to-state reaction mechanisms for plasma-assisted combustion by integrating first-principles calculations with experimental observations via advanced data assimilation techniques.
  • Utilize machine learning methods to identify missing reaction pathways, determine uncertain kinetic parameters, and accelerate the development of extensive reaction networks.
  • Focus research primarily on ammonia and hydrogen mixtures as carbon-free energy carriers.
  • Methane-based systems will serve as reference cases for model validation.
  • The resulting kinetic mechanisms will provide an unprecedented detailed description of non-equilibrium plasma chemistry and vibrationally excited species.
  • Form the basis for state-of-the-art state-to-state models for plasma-assisted combustion simulations.

Profile

  • Doctorate in engineering sciences, chemistry, physics, or applied mathematics, with a specialization in chemical kinetics, combustion, fluid dynamics, or plasma physics.
  • Experience with numerical simulations, excellent computational skills, and strong expertise in programming (Fortran, Python, and/or C++).
  • Interest in fluid dynamics, chemical kinetics, and data-driven modeling.
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • Team player capable of working independently and in an international research context.

Preferences.

  • Experience with CFD software such as Ansys Fluent or OpenFOAM.
  • Experience with plasma-assisted combustion or related plasma physical applications.

Practical

  • The position is offered by a faculty of engineering sciences, department of applied mechanics, research group Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, at a public educational institution.
  • The institution is a member of an alliance of like-minded European universities.
  • The institution guarantees an open, involved, and diverse workplace and offers opportunities to further develop your career.
  • Benefits include extensive remote work possibilities, a remote work allowance or internet allowance, an open informal work environment with attention to work-life balance, exceptional leave arrangements (35 days for full-time employment, closure between Christmas and New Year, plus 3 extra leave days).
  • Additionally, there is free hospitalization insurance, maximum reimbursement for public transport commuting and/or a bicycle allowance, varied meals at campus restaurants at an attractive rate, advantageous sports opportunities, a range of discounts via a benefits program, childcare near campus, and discounts on holiday camps.
  • There is room to shape the job content and continuously learn via internal learning platforms and training.
