Teacher Transition Class

UtrechtHybrid32 hours/week<3months

Children want to learn, discover, and grow. To develop, with small steps or big leaps. That is what the schools of a primary education foundation are all about. This foundation offers excellent education at its affiliated primary schools, providing a safe, stimulating environment where children can explore, at their own level and pace. The foundation's schools operate according to various educational concepts and each have their own character.

Based on an open identity, everyone is welcome, with space and respect for everyone's beliefs, and encouragement of active encounters. The Transition Class is a joint initiative of various organizations. This concept is co-developed and co-executed, meaning you will work in a setting where education and youth care are truly integrated. Within a collaborative partnership, 23 school boards with over 125 primary schools work together on inclusive education in six municipalities.

The partnership ensures a comprehensive range of provisions so that all children can receive appropriate education. Working in the Transition Class means you will collaborate closely with the involved parties to offer children a sustainable and suitable educational career. The Transition Class is a small-scale education and care facility for a maximum of 6 children (4–8 years) and 8 children (8–11 years). In a safe, predictable environment, education and care collaborate intensively.

Daily supervision consists of a teacher, youth workers, and activity supervisors, with the support of an orthopedagogue or behavioral scientist. You will work in one of the groups and provide tailored education to children with complex support needs. In addition to cognitive development, the focus is on strengthening basic skills, so that children can transition to appropriate education within one to two years.

The Transition Class is a temporary arrangement where approximately 70% care and 30% education is initially provided, with the aim of gradually increasing the education component. Together, we will build self-regulation, communication, and academic skills — in small, meaningful steps.

What you do

As a teacher of the Transition Class, you provide tailored education to children aged 4–11 with learning potential who are currently attending a care or day activity setting. Often, there is (a suspicion of) ASD and asynchronous development: cognitively strong, but socio-emotionally or communicatively vulnerable. You combine education and care, so that these children – despite their intensive support needs – can learn, grow, and develop further. As a teacher of the Transition Class, you will:

  • Provide tailored education within a multidisciplinary team
  • Work closely with youth care professionals
  • Establish Individual Development Plans (OPPs) and carefully monitor development
  • Safeguard pedagogical safety and clear frameworks
  • Contribute to the further development of this facility

This is not a regular teaching position. This involves pioneering, coordinating, and continuously reflecting professionally.

Profile

From your entrepreneurial character, you connect with your colleagues, students, and parents. You also prefer to delve deeper to create a genuine connection. You take on new things because they energize you and you easily set your boundaries to keep your work enjoyable. You also have:

  • Your PABO diploma and a desire to teach in the Transition Class
  • Experience within (S)BO or SO-ZML (special primary education or special education for severely mentally disabled)
  • Knowledge of (developmental) learning pathways and didactic skills
  • An enthusiastic and flexible attitude towards the children and your colleagues
  • The ability to pioneer well, you are strong in finding practical solutions and know how to effectively deal with uncertainties and changing circumstances. You remain calm when not everything is clear yet, think in possibilities, and know how to involve others in new developments
  • The ability to provide tailored education, from an innovative and creative problem-solving capacity, to adapt learning material to the learning possibilities of the (non-verbal) child
  • The quality to celebrate the sometimes small developmental steps that children make and to draw sufficient motivation from them
  • The ability to work independently and solitarily, but also to maintain connection with your fellow teacher(s) and the multidisciplinary team with whom you collaborate daily (youth care worker, activity supervisor, speech therapist)
  • Experience in drafting Individual Development Plans (OPPs) or action plans
  • Proficiency in setting educational goals and evaluating progress
  • A need for a pleasant and ambitious working environment where you can continue to develop

Practical

The foundation offers a meaningful place where you have the opportunity to continue to develop and grow. There is an academy where you can follow training and courses, with a dedicated training budget. You are given space for your own creativity and ideas. You will receive travel expense reimbursement (based on primary education collective labor agreement), 8% holiday allowance, and an 8.33% year-end bonus. There is also a collective discount on various insurance policies.
