When the Cold Weather Emergency Scheme is activated, a shelter location opens for people who would otherwise have to spend the night outdoors. As an on-call worker, you offer a safe place, attention, structure, and human contact to people who desperately need it. You work in a dedicated team of colleagues, volunteers, security guards, and other partners to ensure safe, warm, and respectful shelter during cold winter days and nights.
The scheme is activated as soon as the perceived temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius, usually from November to April.
What you will do.
- Be present when the Cold Weather Emergency Scheme is in effect.
- Work during evening, night, and/or morning shifts.
- Be an important point of contact for visitors to the shelter.
- Establish contact with guests and offer a listening ear.
- Contribute to a safe and pleasant atmosphere at the location.
- Supervise the building, inventory, and immediate surroundings.
- Address visitors regarding agreements and house rules if necessary.
- Act according to protocols in case of incidents or calamities and call in emergency services or colleagues where needed.
- Supervise safety and liveability within the shelter.
- Identify questions, concerns, and needs for help from visitors.
- Contribute to a respectful and hospitable environment.
- Register special circumstances and incidents and ensure a good handover to colleagues.
- Perform light administrative tasks.
- Assist with practical and household tasks at the location.
Profile
- Affinity with working with vulnerable individuals and being resilient.
- Be a team player and work through contact.
- Act directly and be able to address others in an accessible way regarding undesirable behavior.
- Work in a de-escalating and recovery-oriented manner.
- Identify questions and problems and, if desired, refer to individual counselors and/or aid organizations.
- Preferably relevant education or experience within care, welfare, or the social domain.
- Good communication skills.
- Proficiency in multiple languages is a plus (e.g., English, Arabic, or Polish).
- Preferably a first aid (BHV) certificate or willingness to obtain one.
- A hands-on mentality.
- Be available this winter when the perceived temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius.
About the team. You will work in an enthusiastic and passionate team dedicated to people who would otherwise have to spend the night outdoors. The team consists of experienced staff, colleagues from a flexible pool, on-call workers, temporary workers, and a committed group of volunteers. Close cooperation is maintained with various external partners, such as a transport company, security guards, care partners, and a caterer.
The collaborating operational coordinator is the first point of contact and responsible for daily management.
