Family Counselor

You play an important role in the treatment of parents and their children/young people (5 to 21 years old) who have a language development disorder (LDD) or are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). These children/young people may have difficulty understanding language, speaking, expressing emotions, or making friends. You empower parents in their upbringing by providing insight, stimulating the child's/young person's abilities and talents, and helping them cope with LDD or a hearing impairment.

The treatment is goal-oriented and aims for progress in the development of the child/young person, the parents, and the communicative climate in the family situation. Occasionally, you support parents with a hearing impairment regarding family communication.

What you do

  • Contribute to family diagnostics and analysis of the request for help.
  • Provide parents with insight into their child's/young person's communication problems (psychoeducation).
  • Collaborate with parents to achieve treatment goals focused on communication, parenting behavior, and/or systemic issues.
  • Establish goals in multidisciplinary action plans and track treatment progress in the care management system.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary and departmental meetings.
  • Visit families and assist with communication and parenting issues.
  • Work on the development of the child/young person so that he/she can better express themselves, feel understood, and participate fully in society.

What they ask

  • Knowledge of the language and communicative development of children/young people.
  • Proficiency in visual communication support (gestures, pictograms, "Een Taal Erbij", supportive drawing) or willingness to follow courses in this area.
  • Relevant HBO diploma in a social-pedagogical field (e.g., Social Work or Pedagogy), supplemented with training in systemic work.
  • Plus: post-HBO training in Practical Pedagogical Family Guidance (PPG), Intensive Ambulatory Family Treatment (IAG), Parental Guidance (OUB), or Video Home Training (VHT).
  • Plus: Sign language proficiency (NGT/NmG).
  • Experience with ambulatory care, specifically in collaborating with parents and working with visual communication (ICB/VIB/VHT).
  • Good planning skills for home visits and administrative tasks.
  • In possession of a driver's license and own transportation.
