This doctoral research focuses on the implementation of interconvictional dialogical learning (IDL) in confessional education. The project is part of a broader comparative research on interreligious dialogue. IDL has become a mandatory part of the curriculum, but its implementation presents significant pedagogical, institutional, and normative challenges. The research studies how IDL is shaped and experienced in schools, and how power relations, norms, and values influence these processes.
The goal is to provide a critical and empirically substantiated insight into the possibilities and limits of IDL. You will work within an interdisciplinary research team.
Profile
- You hold a Research Master's degree or an academic master's degree in educational sciences, social sciences, anthropology, theology, or religious studies, or a related discipline.
- You are admitted to a relevant doctoral program.
- You have demonstrable interest in qualitative empirical research, preferably with experience in ethnographic methods.
- You have a strong interest in confessional education, religious diversity, and interconvictional dialogue.
- You have an affinity with critical approaches to religion, power, secularism, and diversity.
- You are familiar with the educational context, particularly Catholic education and community education.
- You possess an open and reflective attitude towards philosophical and religious diversity.
- You are analytically strong, work independently and organized, and function well within an interdisciplinary research team.
- You have excellent oral and written skills in Dutch, required for fieldwork, and a good command of English, required for academic writing and international collaboration.
What you will do.
- You will prepare and conduct qualitative and ethnographic research on interconvictional dialogical learning (IDL) in confessional education.
- You will collect empirical data through qualitative research methods, including participant observation, interviews, and document analysis.
- You will analyze how dialogical practices are shaped, legitimized, and experienced in educational contexts, with particular attention to power relations, normativity, processes of inclusion and exclusion, and ethical formation.
- You will contribute to the theoretical development of the research project by connecting empirical findings with insights from theology, anthropology, and educational sciences.
- You will write scientific articles and work towards a doctoral dissertation, which you will successfully defend.
- You will present research results at national and international scientific conferences and contribute to their dissemination to educational professionals and other societal stakeholders.
- You will actively collaborate within an interdisciplinary research team and participate in research seminars and other scientific activities of the project.
- You will successfully complete a doctoral program.
- You will be available for teaching assistance or other services to the faculty for a maximum of 20% of your time.
