Expert Cataloguer Inner Asia

The Library Services department is a strategic partner in acquiring, managing, and making accessible physical, digital, and electronic resources. Based on its expertise, it contributes to policy, innovation, and achieving the strategic goals of the library to build a sustainable library environment. Close collaboration takes place within and outside the library to develop, streamline, and implement tailored guidelines, advice, and processes.

High-quality services are provided to the academic community and beyond, with participation in national and international platforms. The focus is on the future, proactively anticipating changing information needs. This temporary assignment is part of a project that aims to further unlock and make the Inner Asia and classical Chinese collections sustainably accessible for research and use.

What you will do. The Digitization and Collection Enrichment service ensures the discoverability and accessibility of physical resources. It creates, manages, and enriches collection data through metadata, digitization, and imaging, and fulfills an expert role within these domains. As an Expert Cataloguer with a focus on Inner Asia, you are responsible for making the Inner Asia collection and related collections accessible. Specifically, this includes:

  • Guiding international experts in cataloging the Inner Asia collection and ensuring the integration of this metadata into the Alma library management system
  • Contributing to the production of the catalog for this collection
  • Cataloging Chinese rubbings from specific collections
  • Cataloging the classical Chinese collection from a specialized department

You report to the Team Leader of Digitization and Collection Enrichment. You also work closely with the Team Leader of Physical Collection Management, specific collections, and with a research group specialized in Chinese Studies.

What they ask

  • Bachelor's degree in Sinology
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written Dutch and/or English and Chinese
  • Very good knowledge of classical Chinese and ancient Chinese works
  • Broad knowledge of Chinese history and culture
  • Efficient, proactive
  • Team player, consults and collaborates well with colleagues, but can also work sufficiently independently
  • Enjoys working accurately, monitors the quality of work, and is not deterred by repetitive tasks
  • Experience with resource management within the Alma library system
  • Good skills in MS Office applications and Google Sheets

Preferences.

  • Experience working in Tibetan, Mongolian

Practical

  • Immediately deployable candidates start at grade 5
  • Promising candidates who cannot immediately take on all tasks or need to complete a specific training program start at grade 4
