Postdoc Dynamics of Poverty and Income

As a postdoc, you will work on two research projects on social and economic mobility.

• The projects focus on the dynamics of income and labor market positions over time, the factors contributing to them, and the meaning of these changes for people and their living environment.
• The first project, on the dynamics of working poverty, investigates how workers enter and exit poverty, looking at changes in work, income, household situation, and the role of institutions and support. You will build on existing work and contribute to its execution, analysis, and scientific publications.
• The second project, on the dynamics of social climbers, investigates what happens when residents of a specific urban district experience a substantial income increase, including relocation considerations and the impact on neighborhoods and socioeconomic development.
• You will combine quantitative and qualitative research methods.
• You will independently design and execute qualitative research.
• You will contribute to quantitative analyses and connect different types of data and analyses.
• You will collaborate with researchers from an academic institution and with societal and policy partners.
• You will contribute to data collection and analysis.
• You will contribute to scientific publications and the translation of research findings to a broader audience.
• There is room to contribute to the further substantive development of both projects based on your own expertise.

We are looking for a curious and independent researcher, interested in issues surrounding poverty, social mobility, labor market, and urban development, who enjoys working at the intersection of scientific research and societal issues.

• Completed or nearly completed PhD in public administration, sociology, social geography, economics, or a related social science.
• Demonstrable experience with empirical social scientific research.
• Strong skills in qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews and qualitative data analysis).
• Knowledge of quantitative research methods to perform analyses and interpret and connect results of more specialized analyses with qualitative findings.
• Ability to connect different theoretical perspectives and research methods.
• Strong academic writing skills and ambition to publish research results internationally.
• Good communication skills and interest in collaborating with policymakers and societal organizations.
• Good command of Dutch and English (C1). Sufficient command of Dutch for conducting independent interviews is necessary.
• Experience with CBS microdata analysis is a plus.
