Penitentiary Officer

You work with detainees from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and with various problems, requiring a flexible and decisive approach. You start your day early by waking detainees, opening doors, and escorting them to appointments or activities. You actively contribute to their reintegration with a keen eye for safety and attention to behavior and signals. Your tasks also include:

• Monitoring the atmosphere in the department, being alert to tensions and disturbances.
• Conducting mentor interviews, guiding and supporting detainees in their personal trajectories.
• Checking the exercise yard to ensure it is safe for use by detainees.
• Performing urine controls, remaining vigilant for deviations and potential safety risks.
• Performing administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files.

What they ask

• You can set your boundaries, conduct firm conversations, and are not easily disturbed by problems or challenges.
• You are empathetic, can relate to the experiences of detainees and stimulate them appropriately, while also maintaining professional distance.
• Demonstrable MBO 4 work and thinking level (assessed with a capacity test).
• Good physical and mental condition.
• Good communication skills in Dutch (verbal and written, e.g., for reports).
• Willingness to work irregular shifts.
• You enjoy working with people, helping them progress even when they resist. You remain calm, set clear boundaries, and act with conviction.

Practical aspects.

• You will be trained by an experienced colleague.
• You will follow a generic and function-specific training course totaling 7 weeks (full-time, during working hours, and at the organization's expense).
• An allowance for irregular shifts is provided, which can amount to up to €450 gross extra salary per month.
• You will receive a new roster each month, 6 weeks in advance, with the possibility to indicate your preferences for working days and times.
