Legal Counsel Payments & Regulatory

A leading technology platform is seeking an experienced lawyer to support its growing legal team. This is a broad, commercially focused role sitting at the intersection of payments regulation, product development, and fintech innovation. You will work closely with business, product, compliance, and regulatory stakeholders on strategic initiatives supporting the expansion of payment and banking services across Europe.

What you will do.

  • Advise on a wide range of payments and banking regulatory matters across the EU.
  • Support the launch and enhancement of payment, account, and embedded banking products.
  • Interpret and advise on PSD2, Payment Services Regulations, E-Money rules, and broader financial services regulation.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate customer, supplier, outsourcing, partnership, and strategic commercial agreements.
  • Provide legal support on onboarding and ongoing management of payment institution, EMI, fintech, and banking clients.
  • Work closely with product, compliance, risk, and operations teams to identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks.
  • Support regulatory engagement and implementation of new European regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with cross-border projects and expansion initiatives across multiple European jurisdictions.
  • Manage external counsel where required.

Profile

  • Qualified lawyer in a European jurisdiction (UK, Dutch, or other EU qualification considered).
  • Experience gained in-house within a bank, fintech, payments business, or financial institution, or from a leading law firm with a strong financial services practice.
  • Strong knowledge of payments regulation, including PSD2 and related European regulatory frameworks.
  • Commercially minded with experience negotiating complex commercial agreements.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment.
  • Able to work independently and engage confidently with senior stakeholders.

Desirable experience.

  • Embedded banking, Banking-as-a-Service, or payment infrastructure experience.
  • Experience supporting regulated entities including banks, EMIs, or payment institutions.
  • Knowledge of EU licensing, passporting, DORA, AML, or broader financial regulatory frameworks.
  • Exposure to SEPA, correspondent banking, clearing, or transaction banking products.
