As Head of Engineering, you are responsible for the technical quality of everything an internal department delivers: from architecture to code and documentation. You create the conditions in which developers, architects, and QA can deliver effectively. Within the context of a transition, your assignment is twofold: to continue delivering qualitatively and to prepare for the handover.
What you do
Qualitative delivery.
- Safeguard, strengthen, and supplement the existing quality approach with tools and guidelines for the teams.
- Make quality transparent and improve it across a broad spectrum: from architecture documentation to code quality, from test and release management to CI/CD pipelines.
- Supplement the approach with more concrete policies where they are lacking and refine processes based on execution and input from colleagues in security, operations, and compliance.
- Establish internal guidelines for secure, maintainable code and action plans to help teams properly open-source/maintain their code.
- Evaluate designs, plans, and results and serve as a technical sparring partner for architects, tech-leads, and QA specialists.
- The goal is software that is measurably high quality and meets (external) quality requirements and the client's wishes.
Preparing for handover.
- Collaborate with engineers from the teams and product managers to gain insight into the status, dependencies, and quality of code and documentation.
- Create plans to bring these up to standard and manage their progress.
- The goal is for a receiving party to be able to take over, understand, manage, and further develop the products without being dependent on the people who built them.
The engineering practice.
- Build and maintain a functional development, architecture, and QA community.
- Ensure the community's functioning and utilize it for evaluating, improving, and establishing processes and guidelines.
- Lead organization-wide technical initiatives, such as the use of AI, the further movement towards DevSecOps, and the improvement of the toolstack.
- Be a pragmatic, technical heavyweight: be hands-on in technology and write policies if necessary.
- Achieve results through the teams and professionals you collaborate with.
What they ask
- Minimum university-level working and thinking ability.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in software development.
- Minimum 4 years of experience managing projects related to (quality of) software development.
Preferences.
- In-depth knowledge of DevSecOps methodology, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience in drafting and reviewing architecture and design documentation.
- Experience in setting up and applying (processes for) quality assurance such as QA, code quality, automated testing.
- Demonstrable experience in drafting and implementing concrete technical policies such as assessment frameworks, guidelines, or procedures.
