Public Space Designer

A government organization is responsible for the project-based realization of civil and cultural-technical projects, from the initiation phase to handover to administrators.
- Public space projects are becoming more complex due to various challenges such as liveability, mobility, sustainability, climate adaptation, energy transition, and asset management.
- The complexity requires strategic considerations and accountability for political, financial, and/or societal impact.
- The organization has a unique composition, dealing with both urban and rural challenges in the countryside, ranging from area development to reconstructions.
- The assignment is intended to replace an employee on sick leave.
What you do
- Translates ideas and ambitions into an actual design for public space.
- Works professionally and project-based, collaborating closely with internal and external civil engineering specialists.
- Smoothly switches between different levels of abstraction and interests, and translates policy principles into practical feasibility.
- Places the end-user (resident) at the center of the design and effectively communicates the rationale behind the design.
- Works at both strategic and tactical levels and plays a key role in the development of outdoor spaces.
- Develops integrated designs, carefully balancing spatial quality, functionality, and the interests of involved parties.
- Prepares design and specification drawings for civil engineering projects (construction/reconstruction of roads, redesign of residential areas, preparing land for construction and habitation).
- Contributes to project teams and is actively involved in project team meetings and resident participation processes.

- Presents and communicates clearly with administrators, project teams, external parties, and residents.

- Contributes directly to a sustainable and liveable environment, where designs contribute to themes such as climate adaptation, biodiversity, and the energy transition.
- Can effectively navigate different interests and levels of abstraction, translating policy frameworks into feasible designs.
What they ask
- Minimum of 1 year demonstrable work experience in the past 4 years as a Public Space Designer.
- Demonstrable work experience in the past 5 years with Microstation.
- Demonstrable work experience with collaborative processes that consider the interests of various stakeholders.
- Agrees to the stated secondment conditions.
Preferences.
- Completed education at a minimum of HBO bachelor level in civil engineering, landscape architecture, or another relevant field of study.
- Minimum of 5 years demonstrable work experience in the past 10 years as a Civil Engineering Public Space Designer.
- Demonstrable work experience with Adobe programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) and with programs such as Autocad, NLCS, Microstation, and 3D visualization.
- Demonstrable work experience with integrated projects involving multiple disciplines.
- Demonstrable work experience with climate adaptation, biodiversity, greening, and the role of soil and water in design issues.
