This research group, part of an academic institution, investigates the function and therapeutic potential of protein kinases and phosphatases in diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders. The group possesses extensive expertise in mouse models, human cell culture and organoids, protein isolation and purification, biological and biochemical assays, molecular biology and DNA/RNA technology, gene editing, and mutagenesis.
New analytical techniques are also developed for customized (phospho)proteomics and interactomics analyses, supported by mass spectrometry and targeted data processing.
What you do
You will be responsible for the following experimental and administrative tasks:
- Performing and assisting with experimental work, independently or in a team. Examples include human cell culture, plasmid generation, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein production, mouse breeding and genotyping, enzymatic assays, and protein-protein interaction assays.
- A significant part of the work will involve specialized animal research for preclinical testing in mouse models of a rare syndrome affecting brain development and function: drug injections, blood sampling and biochemical blood tests, specialized behavioral tests for the physical, motor, cognitive, and social development of mice in neonatal and adult stages, post-mortem isolation of mouse brains, and their biochemical and histological analysis.
- Independently biochemically and functionally characterizing new genetic variants from potential patients with the syndrome will also be an important part of the task package.
- Processing and reporting of results, including statistical analyses.
- Contributing to the general operation of the lab (order, procurement, inventory, databases, website, instrument maintenance).
- Taking on responsibilities related to safety, organization, and technical support for (new) master's or doctoral students.
What they ask
- Preferably a bachelor's degree in biomedical laboratory technology, specialization in pharmaceutical and biological laboratory technology, or equivalent by experience.
- Broad scientific interest and willingness to engage in both fundamental and translational scientific research.
- Excellent basic knowledge of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and analytical techniques.
- Willingness and prior experience working with laboratory animals; a recognized animal testing certificate (Felasa B) is required.
- A team player, but also capable of working independently.
- Attention to detail, meticulous, and communicative.
- Good knowledge of common PC applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and statistics (Graphpad).
- Motivated to expand your knowledge and skills within an international and multidisciplinary scientific environment.
- Good knowledge of English is essential; good knowledge of Dutch is desirable.
- Plus points: practical experience in the aforementioned disciplines.
