This is a temporary assignment where you will lead a team of approximately 5 engineers. You will bring sufficient mechanical engineering knowledge to assess their design work. You will take over the Project Engineering organization, identify what is working well and what can be improved, and ensure a useful handover to the future permanent successor. The goal is to keep the department running and gather information for the successor.
The department processes customer orders where existing machines are engineered specifically for the customer. Approximately 70% of the work is close to existing designs, while other orders require more adaptations. Engineers translate these orders into adapted designs, drawings, specifications, bills of materials, machine configurations, and other technical documentation for purchasing and production. The client is a technical machine builder.
What you will do.
- Temporarily lead a Project Engineering team of approximately 5 FTE.
- Be able to substantively assess mechanical engineering designs, drawings, and technical choices made by engineers.
- Maintain an overview of the engineering of machines that are adapted from existing designs to customer-specific requirements.
- Be able to discuss drawings, specifications, bills of materials, machine configurations, and technical documentation.
- Not only look from a planning and process perspective; for technical questions, you should also be able to examine the practical situation with engineers or colleagues in the workshop.
- Coordinate within the team and, where necessary, collaborate with people from Maintenance Engineering who can support order processing.
- During the interim period, document what a future permanent team lead needs to know about the team, working methods, and ongoing points of attention.
- Identify areas where things can be improved and, where possible, implement improvements during the assignment.
- Ensure that knowledge and points of attention are not lost when the permanent successor starts.
- Taking on engineering work yourself is possible if it fits your background and the situation, but it is not a requirement.
Profile
- Solid background in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar technical field.
- Sufficient experience with engineering to substantively assess mechanical engineering designs and drawings from colleagues.
- Experience with machine building or a technical environment where engineering is directly linked to production or execution.
- Ability to lead a small engineering team and maintain an overview of activities, priorities, and progress.
- Experience as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Lead Engineer, Engineering Team Lead, or technical Project Leader.
- If coming from project management, it is important that your mechanical engineering knowledge is still sufficiently up-to-date.
- Able to look both process-wise and practically switch when a technical question from engineering or the workshop requires it.
- Understand existing working methods first before determining what actually needs to be adjusted.
- Document and transfer findings in such a way that a future permanent team lead can build upon them.
