Fisheries Data Researcher

What you will do.

  • Research how new and existing fisheries data can be used more intelligently to better understand fish stocks and support fisheries policy.
  • Track data throughout the entire chain, link different data sources, and translate analyses into insights for researchers, the sector, and policymakers.
  • Contribute to innovative research and monitoring initiatives related to fisheries, data collection, and sustainable use of marine resources.
  • Investigate how new data sources, including high-resolution data and innovative digital applications, can contribute to fisheries research and monitoring.
  • Map data flows, link datasets and metadata, and ensure data quality and usability.
  • Analyze how this information can be integrated into existing scientific analyses, indicators, and models for assessing fish stocks and fishing activities.
  • Combine statistical analyses and modeling with a broad interest in the practical aspects behind the data.
  • Work with programming languages such as R or Python.
  • Seek interaction with fishermen, auctions, data managers, and other stakeholders to better understand processes, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Research how changes in fishing practices, technologies, or management measures impact catches, economic results, and the evaluation of fish stocks.
  • Analyze data, develop new methodologies, and translate results into clear insights for science, the sector, and policy.
  • Visit ports and fish auctions, build a network within the sector, present results to diverse target groups, and collaborate with national and international partners.
  • Be given the space to independently develop research questions and help guide the development of innovative data collection, monitoring, and fisheries management.

What they ask

  • A master's degree in (bio-)engineering, marine biology, or a similar field.
  • For foreign diplomas, an equivalence recognition will be required upon employment through a recognized institution.
  • Experience with data management of datasets and statistical analyses in R or a similar program.
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

  • You are hands-on and proactive, you identify opportunities and seize them.
  • You communicate smoothly and accessibly, easily switching between different interlocutors, from researchers and policymakers to fishermen and fish auction employees.
  • Curiosity, analytical thinking, and the motivation to unravel complex issues are at least as important.
