Researcher Algorithms for Eigenvalue Problems

Flemish BrabantHybrid3 hours/week<3months

The Numerical Analysis & Applied Mathematics (NUMA) section of a leading university has a long tradition in the analysis and development of numerical methods for a wide variety of problems.

  • Research topics include numerical (multi)-linear algebra, computational algebraic geometry, approximation theory, uncertainty quantification, numerical simulation, control and optimization, numerical methods for data science, and numerical software.
  • The section collaborates with many research teams within the Faculties of Engineering Science and Engineering Technology, and with other groups nationally and internationally.
  • The university is one of the world's leading universities, highly successful in competitive European research funding.
  • It offers a stimulating multidisciplinary research environment, many opportunities for collaboration, and a broad range of training courses.

What you do

  • You will focus on nonlinear eigenvalue problems with eigenvector nonlinearities, which are algebraic eigenvalue problems whose matrix depends on the eigenvector itself.
  • Applications range from electronic structure computations to machine learning.
  • The aim of the postdoc position is to strengthen a research project within NUMA on structure-exploiting algorithms for eigenvector nonlinearities with a strong theoretical foundation.
  • Project objectives include:
  • The construction of multivariable rational approximations that give rise to spectrally equivalent linear problems.
  • The development of global algorithms that can reliably compute all eigenvalues within a prescribed region or interval.
  • The use of projection-based techniques to extend these algorithms to large-scale problems, thereby bridging the gap between methodological developments and practical applications.
  • The proposed methodology combines techniques from rational approximation, multi-parameter eigenvalue algorithms, and nonlinear algebra.
  • The research team is embedded in a strong network of international collaborations.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD degree in mathematics (applied, computational mathematics) or Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mathematical Engineering).
  • You have key experience in the domain adjacent to the project.

Practical

  • A fully funded postdoc position in an international context.
  • The position is for one year at the Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics (NUMA) research unit.
  • Funding includes a very competitive tax-free scholarship, as well as social and medical insurance.
  • Applications will be considered as soon as they are received, and the opening will be closed as soon as a suitable candidate has been hired.
  • The university strives for an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity among individuals and groups as an asset, and is committed to equal opportunity.
  • No form of discrimination is accepted based on, but not limited to, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, ethnic or national background, skin colour, religious and philosophical diversity, neurodivergence, employment disability, health, or socioeconomic status.
