As a correctional officer, you ensure safety and structure within a judicial institution. The role demands self-confidence and stress resistance. You supervise and actively contribute to the reintegration of detainees. You balance strictness and humanity to help detainees on their way to a better future.
What you do
- Monitoring the atmosphere in the department, being alert to tensions and disturbances of order
- Conducting mentor interviews with detainees, guiding and supporting them in their personal trajectories
- Checking the exercise yard and ensuring it is safe for use by detainees
- Taking urine samples, remaining vigilant for abnormalities and potential safety risks
- Performing administrative tasks, such as booking visitor appointments and maintaining files
- Waking detainees, opening doors, and accompanying them to appointments or activities
- Maintaining a keen eye for safety and attention to behavior and signals
Profile
- Ability to set boundaries and conduct firm conversations
- Ability to relativize, not easily disturbed by problems or challenges
- Empathy to understand the experiences of detainees, stimulating and motivating them appropriately
- Ability to maintain professional distance
- Demonstrable MBO 4 working and thinking level (assessed with a capacity test)
- Good physical and mental condition
- Good communication skills in Dutch, both verbal and written (e.g., for reports)
- Willingness to work irregular shifts
- Enjoys working with people and helping them progress, even when they show resistance. Remains calm, sets clear boundaries, and acts with conviction
Practical
- Onboarding period with an experienced colleague
- Generic and function-specific training totaling 7 weeks (full-time availability required)
- Training during working hours and at the organization's expense
- Monthly schedule, known 6 weeks in advance, with the possibility to indicate preferences
- Allowance for irregular shifts, up to €450 gross extra salary per month
- Minimum age requirement: 18 years
- A VOG (Certificate of Conduct) and a medical examination are part of the procedure
