As an assistant defense advisor, you will be seconded by a Ministry of Defense. The ministry's employees collaborate with staff from a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and employees from a military representation to an international organization.
The work includes, among other things, the Alliance's deterrence and defense profile, defense planning, burden-sharing, material cooperation, nuclear deterrence, air and missile defense, resilience, crisis management, capacity building, intelligence and cyber defense cooperation, and resource management. In addition, issues related to specific geographical areas are also addressed.
What You Will Do. The ministry's employees at the international organization work on defense policy matters within the framework of the organization, and in synergy with defense advisors at other international entities. You will independently cover meetings within your areas of work and negotiate with other allies on behalf of the country and the ministry.
A significant part of the work involves advocating for the country's defense policy priorities, primarily through negotiations in the international organization's expert committees. Establishing networks and disseminating information to representatives of other countries and to national authorities are important processes in this regard. Your tasks will be further defined taking into account your qualifications and experience, as well as the ongoing prioritization and allocation of cases.
However, the position is expected to have a special focus on resource policy, material, and industrial cooperation.
Profile
You can apply with both a civilian or military background. As a civilian applicant:
- You are an official or specialized consultant.
- You have in-depth knowledge of the ministerial area.
- You have insight into political processes from work experience within the defense organization or central government in general.
- You have good knowledge of defense and security policy.
- You have a particular interest and motivation to work within the international organization.
As a military applicant:
- You are a major or commander.
It is an advantage if you have previously worked with resource issues or industry, but it is not necessary to perform the position.

- The position requires flexibility regarding short deadlines, diverse tasks, and the organization of your work.
- You have a holistic view, capable of integrating the organization's development into your area of responsibility, in accordance with the Ministry of Defense's mission and vision.
Practical
The position is advertised for both civilian and military applicants. For civilian applicants:
- You will be employed as an official or specialized consultant in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
- Depending on your experience and qualifications, supplements can be negotiated in connection with the employment.
- You will also receive an employer-funded pension scheme.
For military applicants:
- The position is filled according to the protocol to the collective agreement for academics in state service concerning officers under the Ministry of Defense.
- The position is classified in salary group 5, which includes majors/commanders.
- If you are already employed within the defense organization, you will continue to be employed in accordance with current agreements.
- Individual supplements can be negotiated.
For both civilian and military applicants:
- You will be seconded under the applicable foreign allowance scheme, meaning that, among other things, your relocation and housing expenses will be paid, and you will receive a tax-free foreign allowance.
