A scientific institute is looking for a biosafety officer to contribute to the quality, environmental, and (bio)safety management system. You will support scientists, technicians, and general services in delivering quality work with respect for environmental and biosafety rules and well-being at work. After on-the-job training, you will take on the role of biosafety manager/coordinator.
You will report to the "Biosafety and Environment" unit manager and join a team of 4 colleagues within a department of 21 colleagues.
What you will do.
- Management of contained use permits: processing and following up on new applications, in close consultation with the biosafety committee members and competent authorities.
- Evaluating risk analyses.
- Preparing analyses and proposing suggestions to maintain a waste policy compliant with legislation: drafting waste instructions/SOPs at the institute level, evaluating existing waste instructions at the service activity level with regard to contained use permits.
- Supervising storage modalities of GMOs and/or pathogenic organisms, internal and external transport, and decontamination of premises.
- Handling incidents and non-conformities, proposing and following up on improvement actions.
- Ensuring all data is traceable and overseeing the maintenance and control of installations and equipment.
- Monitoring compliance with 'contained use' legislation, conducting and reporting audits, and formulating proposals.
- Training/sensitizing institute employees regarding the biosafety policy.
Profile
- Diploma: Master's in sciences, bio-engineer, biomedical sciences, veterinary sciences, industrial engineer.
- Professional experience: At least 5 years of experience with a quality management system or environmental management system or biosafety or prevention.
- Generic skills: Critical and diplomatic; organized and analytical; solution- and system-oriented; good communication skills (written and oral); able to set priorities and willing to work in a team.
- Technical skills: Excellent MS-office knowledge; good (technical) basic knowledge regarding the operation of BSL3 lab facilities; experience with ADR legislation is a plus.
- Language skills: Excellent command of one of the two Belgian national languages (Dutch/French) is required. An active, very good command of the English language is essential.
